National Gallery of ArtFrench Impressionist Section: Woman With a Parasol - Madame Monet and Her Son Oil on Canvas, 1875 Claude Monet French, 1840 - 1926 National Gallery of Art The color in this piece grows darker as you reach the top, suggesting depth. Also, the ground is green grass with some red flowers, which are compliments. Other than this, it mostly has a cool analogous color scheme ad additive compliments to the more important areas, like the faces. The diagonal of the umbrella counters the diagonal of the girl's shadow and these two diagonals serve to guide one's eye around the painting. The two figures are on the the vertical third lines. The brush strokes add a wispyness of the wind, Monet decided not to blend the colors to perfection, but rather placing colors next to one another to create the desired effect. Monet's brushstroke is obvious in this piece, most prominently in the umbrella. Monet's mark in this piece is wispy and loose. Free-Sackler GalleriesArt of the Islamic World: Vase With Four Handles Syria Ca. 1325-50 Glass, enameled and gilded Freer Gallery of Islamic Art This vase is made from glass, upon which is enamel. Though the person isn't drawing on the vase, they were still making the mark by using the enamel as well as the shape of the overall vase, which he formed. The surface of this piece is glass, but the shape and smoothness of it is a sort of mark. Every piece of decoration on the vase represents the mar. Many of the marks in this exhibit are calligraphic. HirshornNon-Objective Art Cold Mountain 2 Brice Marden 1991 525 x 690 mm One can feel the movement of the painting through the brushstrokes. These brushstrokes suggest tat he painting fluidly and quickly, active painting. He also took enough care to make it appealing. His wisp, but flat brush stroke gives the painting a wispy feeling on the flat surface The colors used are mostly greys and browns suggesting sadness, or coldness as in the title. Comparison
